BIRMINGHAM, AL., (August 5, 2020)Patient Experience Journal (PXJ) recently published a study from Pack Health entitled Insights from individuals with chronic conditions in the context of COVID-19. With this publication, Pack Health joins a group of researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, family members, and policymakers as contributors in leading research that impact the delivery of service, safety, and quality and their influence on the experience of patients, residents, and families across healthcare settings.

The study, authored by Pack Health’s Medical Affairs team, evaluates knowledge and concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey sample included individuals with one or more chronic conditions, including cardiometabolic, autoimmune, respiratory, and cancer diagnoses. Two surveys, focusing on healthcare access, barriers, and concerns related to the COVID-19 virus, were distributed during March and April 2020. Results from 841 individuals were analyzed, with respondents reporting an average of 2 chronic conditions and 62% would be classified as “at-risk” for COVID-19 complications by the CDC. Only 20% reported a conversation about COVID-19 with a healthcare provider, 9% reported anxiety, 35% indicated loneliness. The analysis suggested that analyzing concern and its association with health behaviors and anxiety should be a priority for innovative solutions.

“The insights presented are invaluable in that we now have a deeper knowledge of how consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic may impact those with chronic conditions,” says B. Stephen Burton, MS, Senior Outcomes Manager at Pack Health and lead author of the publication. “This understanding is imperative to inform interventions designed to support individuals at higher risk of serious complications and death.”

“The contributions in PXJ continue to actively expand the research conversation on patient experience performance and improvement. Their insights, ideas, and challenges add momentum to the patient experience movement overall, reinforcing the power found in the sharing of ideas,” said Jason Wolf, Ph.D., CPXP, Founding Editor of Patient Experience Journal. “As we continue to engage more individuals in the patient experience conversation, from researchers and academics to practitioners and innovators, PXJ serves as an important connecting point in the growing patient experience community. It also reinforces the critical conversation on experience that must be sustained during this time of crisis.”
